Marriage Survives

Generally when I hear someone say they don't "believe" in marriage or don't care if they co-habitate their biggest argument is that marriage is dead...the divorce rate is 50%.

Well...they are wrong. Statistics actually show that for women under 50 the divorce rate has decreased (from 1996 to 2009). I find it interesting that the rate for women over 50 has gone up...is that because of the feminist movement?

Stats aren't perfect but when the statistics are this consistent it's clear that the meme of 50 percent divorce is just flat false.

I like this article's take on why the myth of 50% divorce is perpetuated.
"Maybe those in the media and entertainment industry lie in order to feel better about their own shortcomings. Ironically enough, the one place where a fifty percent divorce rate is likely accurate, would be in the media/entertainment industry itself. It must be a hard place to be, realizing that failure isn’t the norm except for when applied to your own sad, empty little lives."

If one hears a lie often enough it starts to sound plausible. Maybe Hollywood is just jealous that most of the rest of us work hard and stick with our marriages. No offense to Tom and Kate

Marriage is alive and well. It's a difficult institution but well worth it.
